Our skin is programmed to age chronologically, however, this ageing process is accelerated by many external and lifestyle factors, for example, UV damage, pollution, smoking, poor diet, stress, alcohol, health, and medications. These all affect the skin by causing damage to the cells encouraging premature ageing, wrinkles etc. and reducing the skins ability to heal or repair itself. 

Within our skin cells, we have Telomeres that sit at the end of the chromosomes. Our skin cells reproduce by dividing through a process called mitosis. Every time our cell divides the telomeres become shorter until they are gone and this cell has come to it’s limit (nicknamed the ‘Hayflick’ limit). Once this has happened there will be no more replication from this cell and no other skin cells produced.

It is believed that the telomeres are our secret to the longevity of our youthfulness.

When we have one of the many common anti-ageing or rejuvenation treatments that rely on trauma or ablation to the skin, this forces our skin cells to divide to form new fresh cells. However, this will shorten those telomeres and thus be a step closer to that ‘hayflick limit.’ It may give you intensive anti-ageing results initially but it is essentially speeding up that cellular ageing.
